EARTH DAY IS AN ANNUAL EVENT ON APRIL 22 TO DEMONSTRATE SUPPORT FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

WHY WE MUST RECONNECT WITH NATURE?

We humans like to think of ourselves as separate from and superior to the natural world around us. With our advanced civilisations, technological marvels, and shelters that protect us from the elements, we’ve insulated ourselves from nature perhaps more than any species in Earth’s history. But as the quote states: “We will never be truly healthy, satisfied, or fulfilled if we live apart and alienated from the environment from which we evolved.”
This raises a profound question - can we really thrive and find deep fulfilment if we are alienated from the environments that shaped our minds, bodies, and spirits over millions of years of evolution? The implication is that no, we cannot. Just as a fish cannot be truly healthy in a barren tank void of plants, rocks, and the richness of its native habitat, neither can we humans flourish in a purely artificial world disconnected from nature.
THE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL IMPACTS OF NATURE DEPRIVATION
There is great wisdom in this perspective from the lens of evolutionary psychology and biology. Our species emerged and adapted over aeons through intimate interactions with the natural world - the cycles of day and night, the changing seasons, the sounds of living creatures, the smells of trees and flowers. Nature is woven into
our fundamental make-up.
When we lose touch with nature’s grounding and rejuvenating presence, research shows we can suffer psychological imbalances like depression, anxiety, and attention deficits. Chronic health issues like obesity, heart disease, and certain cancers also appear more prevalent in lifestyles disconnected from the outdoors. Could this alienation from our evolutionary
environment be a root cause?

WHAT DOES RECONNECTING WITH NATURE MEAN?

Thankfully, there are ways to help reconnect, which we explore in our new book “The Light Within Us.” This comprehensive guide takes you on a journey from the Big Bang to the present day, revealing how we evolved alongside nature over billions of years. It then provides scientifically-backed strategies for redesigning your lifestyle and environment to nurture health and wellbeing in harmony with our natural roots.
With tips for bringing nature into your spaces, this book offers a path for reviving the deep rapport with the natural world that our ancestors experienced. We were shaped by nature - and continue to need its grounding presence to be wholly, vibrantly alive. Let “The Light Within Us” be your guide to reclaiming that vital connection.
But our commitment to sustainability doesn’t end with our products – it extends to our packaging and operations as well. Wfe use only recyclable and environmentally friendly packaging, primarily cardboard, which is then recycled into protective packaging for outgoing goods. Our water supplier invests in carbon-offsetting schemes and water infrastructures in underdeveloped countries, aligning with our mission to prioritise the environment.

At Phos, we’re not just focused on creating products – we’re driving towards a circular economy. Our products score highly on circularity assessments, ensuring they have minimal environmental impact throughout their life cycle. We prioritise repair over replacement, with the majority of returns being repaired and recycled rather than discarded.
We’re proud to partner with organisations like Reewild and the Green Light Alliance, working together to combat climate change and promote sustainable practices in the lighting industry. Through initiatives like our book, “The Light Within Us,” we aim to educate and inspire others to embrace sustainable, planet-centric design
